A sparkly start
We saw in the new year surrounded by sparkles, fizz and friends. I’m not that fussed about celebrating Hogmanay but being able to see the castle from our living room seemed too good an opportunity to miss! Come midnight we all piled into the bay window to watch the fireworks and toast to 2014.
I wanted a classy party so made cocktails and canapés, and filled the flat with tea lights and glitter and shiny ribbons. The jars on the mantelpiece were inspired by this party and I love them so much they’re still on show. And I knew it was worth hanging on to all those stars from my first flat warming; they were bound to come in handy one day!
The centrepiece of the canapé table was an amazing punch bowl recently acquired from a friend, which is gorgeous. There’s nothing like drinking cocktails from a cut glass tea cup to make you feel classy! I’ll have to find a place for this in all future parties. I made a selection of savoury and sweet canapés and while they were much appreciated I’m not sure I can be bothered making so many fiddly wee things again. As well as all the champagne we had 2 cocktails, of which this was my favourite. Cheers!
Vodka cranberry cooler (recipe adapted from Real Simple)
1. Put 1kg cranberries in a pan with 4 cups sugar (I used caster) and 2 cups water. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 mins.
2. Use a slotted spoon to transfer 3 cups of cranberries to a large bowl. Strain the syrup from the rest of the cranberry mixture into the bowl and leave to cool.
3. At party time, add 3 litres tonic water, 1 litre vodka and the juice of 1 lime to the bowl. Serve with ice.
