Walls, war and Westeros
I have tried really, really hard not to bombard you with photos of my holiday, so this is just a select few. Dubrovnik is such a beautiful city and we saw so many Game of Thrones filming locations that I was very snap happy while we were there! Not only is it beautiful, but it’s compact too, so it’s perfect for a city break. If you go, you must walk around the walls (expensive compared with other tourist attractions but money well spent, the views are spectacular) and you should definitely get gelato from Sladoledarna Dubrovnik, at the Pile end of the Stradun, the main street. We managed at least two a day! The city has such character, it’s beautiful but still bears bullet marks from the war in the 90s, and has shell damaged walls scattered amongst the amazing architecture and stunning sea views.
If you’re a fan of Game of Thrones then you will absolutely love it, it is so recognisable as Kings Landing. We were lucky enough to be there shortly before they started filming the next series and spotted several sets being built. Most exciting was a day trip to Trsteno Arboretum, a gorgeous garden which is used as the palace gardens in the show. At first glance it looked like a lovely natural ornate garden, but on closer examination we discovered that all the benches, urns, statues and some of the plants were fake! We spent an excitable few hours walking around tapping everything in sight to test its authenticity, and happened upon the amazing souvenir you see above!
While I was snapping away with my trusty camera the boyfriend was rediscovering his love of filming, and he has put together this video of our happy holiday. It really gives you a sense of the place. Watching it just makes me want to go back!
