Like apple pie in a cup!

October 16, 2012

You may remember that earlier in the year I went to New York (I might have mentioned it once or twice).  While I was there I discovered an amazing Starbucks drink that is not on offer over here, and it tastes just like apple pie in a cup!  That photo up there is me on the Brooklyn Bridge with a venti caramel apple spice (it was cold that day and we needed fuel for the walk!).  It is basically hot cinnamony apple juice topped with whipped cream and caramel sauce, so it has about as many calories as a slice of apple pie too, but it is oh so delicious.  As the weather’s getting colder here I’ve been craving some caramelly appley goodness so I hunted down a recipe and made it last week, and it was almost as good as the ones I had in the big apple itself!

Home made Caramel Apple Spice (from Budget Savvy Diva)

1.  Make the cinnamon syrup by simmering 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup brown sugar and 1 tsp ground cinnamon in a small pan for 5 minutes.  It should reduce by half.

2.  Put 12 fluid oz / 360ml apple juice (from concentrate) per person into a pan and heat through.  You could also do this in the microwave.

3.  Once the juice is warmed stir in some of the cinnamon syrup (the recipe suggests 3 tbsp per serving but I think that’s too much!).

4.  Top with some whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce (you could make your own but I just bought both of these in the supermarket).

Ooooh – I had these in Canada and loved them. I might have to try this – thanks for the recipe!

This sounds great! I went to NYC in August and so I was all about the iced vanilla latte…but this looks amazing (and now I NEED to go back to New York!).

If I could sent you a vat of that caramel apple spice, I would.
