Dinner with a difference

June 26, 2012

On Friday night we sat round a large dining table with ten other people, sharing a delicious dinner, conversation and laughter flowing with the wine.  What’s so different about that?  Apart from the fact that we had never met our hosts or any of the other guests before and we were all paying to be there, you mean?  Yes, that’s right, I went to my first supper club.

Otherwise known as an underground restaurant, a supper club is when someone basically turns their house into a restaurant for a night, albeit a very friendly one with a distinctly dinner party feel about it.  Charlie and Evelyn’s Table was the first supper club in Edinburgh, and hosts Rachel and Chris have just returned from a house-moving-and-baby-having break.  On Thursday they tweeted that they had some cancellations for Friday night and I impulsively fired off an email and booked two seats at their very lovely table (after checking with my boyfriend that he was up for “a probably delicious but slightly crazy dinner plan”)!  Thankfully it was nothing like the picture above, there was no awkwardness, everyone was lovely and friendly and chatty and the food was fabulous.  My favourite was the pea and mint risotto with parmesan crisps, closely followed by the raspberry tart with just a hint of mint and lime.  But everything was pretty delicious, from the stilton gougeres and seared tuna canapes to the pappa al pomodoro (that’s tomato soup to you and me) and the seabass with chive creme fraiche.  Yum.  For more in depth descriptions of the food and to nosey at some fellow diners, check out Wine and Olives and Queen of Everything.  I’ll definitely be trying some more supper clubs!

Oh cool, glad you liked them so much! I can’t wait to go back again (though I’m going to have to ask I didn’t get round to booking any of their new dates… d’oh!) x
