Showtime

April 20, 2012

The first day I visited New York with Nicola we got the train to Penn Station and walked up to Times Square.  I was completely overwhelmed by the scale of the buildings, and wasn’t sure I liked it very much.  Times Square itself is awful but impressive, it’s just so bright, so busy, so tacky, so commercial.  I ended up spending quite a lot of time there though because it is at the heart of the theatre district, and home of the brilliant TKTS discount booth where you can get same day show tickets with massive discounts.  Brilliant for show-loving but skint Scottish girls!  Thanks to TKTS Nicola and I saw Godspell in theatre in the round; the staging was incredible and it was so vibrant and energetic, I adored it.  That second photo there is just after Christine and I went to the TKTS booth in Brooklyn and got 40% off tickets for Seminar starring Alan Rickman – we were pretty excited!   The play was just fabulous; funny and clever and so full of Alan Rickman’s voice.  Wow.  We also saw Anything Goes which pretty much knocked my socks off, it was so good.  It was just so smooth and classy and flawless.  The singing and dancing was just incredible, the costumes and set were amazing, it was just brilliant.  We got dressed up all fancy and sang all the way home on the subway with happy hearts and happy faces.
