Fun in Philly

April 8, 2012

Apparently one of the reasons the university developed in Princeton was that it is one day’s ride on horseback from both New York and Philadelphia, so it was a perfect overnight stopping place for all the important people travelling between the two.  Princeton is obviously still a perfect base for exploring both cities so on my first full day we took a trip to Philly with a couple of Nicola’s university friends. For me it was a nice gentle introduction to an American city as although it has skyscrapers it is generally on a much smaller scale than NYC.  It’s also a lovely mix of old and new, and has lots of places you see on the telly and in the films!  We went to Independence Hall and saw the Liberty Bell (until this point everything I knew about American history I learned from National Treasure), we jumped in front of the love statue (and amused all the skateboarders around us as we did so), we posed with Rocky and ran up the famous steps (is now the time to admit I’ve never actually seen Rocky?), and a good time was had by all.
