The gift that keeps on giving

January 11, 2010

Mr M is really good at gifts.  Really, really good.  Sometimes I think he knows me better than I know myself, the gifts he picks out for me are so perfect!  I am not so good at gifts for him.  I try really hard, but I don’t always get it quite right.  This Christmas, however, I did pretty well.

Mr M loves Chinese food and is always trying to get me to cook it for him, but it’s just not a cuisine I’m familiar or comfortable with.  Since discovering Ching-He Huang and her fun and pretty website he has been pretty smitten with her too, so I decided to give him one of her books along with the promise to cook from it often; it’s a gift I will keep on giving all year!

I have to say, I am a complete convert!  Her book is so pretty and is packed full of useful tips and information (conversion charts, glossary of chinese ingredients, UK/US translations) as well as lots of very tempting recipes.  It even coaxed Mr M into trying one of them out last night while I was working!

This was the first recipe we tried (it’s pretty much the same in the book as the link, minus the wasabi mayo and wraps; we had it with rice and stir fried veg) and it set the tone for the others we’ve tried; easy, speedy and packed with flavour.  This is one gift I’m more than happy to keep on giving!
